The painting depicts a hypothetical shop of a steel plant on August 31, 1942 after a siren called for a nationwide strike; the worker who sounded the siren is beheaded; in the upper part there is an inscription “Grève” (strike). A nationwide strike began in Wilts on August 31, 1942 after the German government proclaimed general military conscription. The number of protestants kept growing and the manufacture of military goods was stopped. Manufacturer’s seal on the reverse side: «F•A•M / Mersen•Luxembourg»
