The monument reminds of the story of the girl Sadako Sasaki, who suffered from the atomic explosion in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. At the age of 10, she was diagnosed with leukemia - a direct consequence of radiation sickness. Sadako believed in the legend that a man who had folded a thousand paper cranes would recover. However, the disease progressed, and the girl managed to make only 644 cranes. The friends finished her work, and Sadako was buried with a thousand paper cranes. The monument is located in Hiroshima Peace Park. It was designed by artists K. Kikuchi and K. Ikebe for money collected by the Japanese schoolchildren, including classmates Sadako Sasaki. The monument was unveiled in 1958. Sadako is immortalized in a statue on top of the monument, holding an origami crane in her hands. Inscription on the pedestal of the monument reads [translation]: "This is our cry. This is our prayer. Peace in the world ".
