The monument, 18 meters high, was designed by sculptor Charles Machet (Charles Machet, 1902 - 1980). The first stone was laid by General de Gaulle in 1949, the monument was opened in 1951, a tomb of the unknown maquisard - in 1954; inscriptions on the monument [translation]: "Unknown maquisard rests here", "Where I die, the Motherland is reborn. (Louis Aragon)"
