The award was established by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Spain to give it to veterans of the Garibaldi brigades for their service and personal courage shown during the National Liberation War of 1943-1945. The medal is a bronze five-pointed star; each point has two sides, each one is polished. The centre of the star is decorated with a relief image of the national hero of Italy, Giuseppe Garibaldi. The profile portrait is turned to the left. The reverse is covered with an inscription, which reads: “Guerra di liberazione Nazionale”, along the edges and, “Brigate Garibaldi”, in the centre; at the bottom one reads the date “1943 – 1945” (The National Liberation War / Garibaldi Brigades). All the inscriptions are relief. The top point of the medal has an eye for the ring, through which one may pull a ribbon.
